In 2022, EA. Aquaye Farms Ltd partnered with GreenGrowth Ghana Foundation, an environmental and sustainable development NGO, to conduct an Organic Fertilizer Trial Project in the Gomoa East District. This initiative was aimed at promoting soil health, reducing dependency on chemical fertilizers, and enhancing food safety through organic agriculture.
The project involved setting up demonstration plots across three farming communities—Buduatta, Gomoa Akotsi, and Potsin. Farmers were engaged in hands-on training sessions where composting techniques, application schedules, and crop compatibility were demonstrated. The organic fertilizers used were derived from composted poultry litter, crop residues, and biochar-enhanced compost, all sourced locally.
The outcomes were highly promising:
20–25% increase in organic matter content in the soil within six months.
Yields comparable to or slightly better than chemical fertilizer usage for crops such as maize, okra, and garden eggs.
Improved water retention and lower pest infestation rates in organically treated fields.
Lower cost of inputs, boosting profit margins for smallholder farmers.
This trial has since been adopted by over 40 farmers in the district, and the model is being prepared for regional scale-up.
